Visiting Researcher
Lanfranco Muzi, Ph.D.
Lanfranco Muzi received his M.Sc. degree in Computer Science and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Portland State University in 2009 and 2015, respectively. His current research pertains to underwater-acoustics modeling and physics based signal- and array-processing algorithms, with a special focus on marine ambient-noise processing. He has been a Research Fellow at the NATO-STO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (La Spezia, Italy) in 2013 and 2014, and is a chartered nuclear engineer in Italy, where he received his Laurea degree in Nuclear Engineering from Università di Pisa (Pisa, Italy). Dr. Muzi is a member of IEEE-Eta Kappa NU and of the Acoustical Society of America.

Scott Schecklman, Ph.D.
Scott is working on physics-based signal processing algorithms for terahertz (THz) non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of layered and random media. His primary research interests are wave propagation and scattering physics for radar, sonar and communications systems. He began his career designing cellular networks and antenna systems for aiports and malls. Scott is currently employed at Metron, Inc.
where he models acoustic propagation for sonar systems and underwater communications networks.

Students
Ph.D.
Alex Higgins
Alex is currently pursuing his PhD in the ECE department at PSU. He started his academic career at the Pacific Northwest Collage of Art (PNCA) where he studied fine arts painting and philosophy. He worked for the IT group at (OHSU) for eight years where he found a passion for technology and the sciences. In 2008 he completed his BS degree in Computer Engineering and Physics. In 2012 he completed his master’s studies in Electrical Engineering and accepted a position with Mentor Graphics in (Silicon Valley, CA). His current research interests are computational techniques for physics-based wave propagation models and their scattering from dynamic random boundaries. When he’s not working, you can find him enjoying the Pacific Northwest outdoors or tinkering on one of his small motorbikes.

Masters
Charles Staffeld
Charles Staffeld is a currently working on his MS in electrical engineering with a focus on analog and electromagnetics. He has worked in industry as a hardware designer for a small company which focused on simple Internet of Things (IOT) solutions with radio frequencies. In the NEAR-Lab, he is interested in designing test equipment to gather acoustic and electromagnetic data. In his spare time, Charles builds analog synthesizers and tells jokes.

Cody Henderson
Cody Henderson recently graduated with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Washington State University of Vancouver in December 2017. His continued interest in applied mathematics and electrical engineering have led him to pursue a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at Portland State University with a focus on acoustic signal processing. His hobbies and other interests include; soccer, snowboarding and everything else the Pacific Northwest has to offer outdoors.

Megan Frantz
Megan Frantz received her bachelor's degree in Mathematics from New York University in 2014. She is currently pursing a masters degree in Electrical Engineering, with a focus
in acoustics and optics. Her interests include signal processing and optical imaging. In her spare time, Megan's hobbies include darkroom photography, knitting, and enjoying the
beautiful nature of the Pacific Northwest.

Undergraduate
There are currently no undergradte students working with the NEAR Lab. If you are interested in getting involved with one of our projects, please contact Dr. Siderius or Dr. Lipor. This is a great way to get some work experience and determine if you would like to persue a Masters program.
