Ph.D. Students

Alex Higgins

Alex is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Portland State University. He started his academic career at the Pacific Northwest Collage of Art (PNCA) where he studied fine arts painting and philosophy. But after working with the IT group at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) he found a passion for technology and the sciences. In 2008 he completed his B.S. degree in Computer Engineering and Physics. In 2012 he completed his master’s studies and accepted a position with Mentor Graphics in Silicon Valley (Fremont, CA). After three good years with the company he once again felt the call to research and decided to return to his home town and complete his doctoral degree. His current research interests are computational electromagnetics, signal processing, and semiconductor physics. When he’s not “in the lab” you can find him enjoying the Pacific Northwest outdoors or tinkering on his Aprilia SR50 scooter.

Elizabeth Thorp Küsel, Ph.D.

Liz has been doing research on marine mammal population density estimation methods, and working towards her second Ph.D., in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Her first doctorate was in Mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She loves field work, especially spending time at sea and working with underwater gliders. She is a research volunteer at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) from where she received a science communication fellowship in 2016. She also enjoys traveling with her boyfriend and taking many picures of their adventures.

Scott Jewell

Scott is a new Ph.D. student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department, and is working on boundary reflection problems at the NEAR-Lab. He received a masters in geophysical engineering at Montana Tech and worked as a geophysicist in Montana on engineering, environmental and mining projects. Scott is interested in applying signal processing and acoustics to geophysics. His hobby is collecting hobbies.

Scott Schecklman

Scott is a Ph.D. student in the ECE department at PSU working on physics-based signal processing algorithms for terahertz (THz) non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of layered and random media. His primary research interests are wave propagation and scattering physics for radar, sonar and communications systems. He began his career designing cellular networks and antenna systems for aiports and malls. Scott is currently employed at Metron, Inc. where he models acoustic propagation for sonar systems and underwater communications networks.

Masters Students

Daniel Frister

Phu Nguyen

Phu Nguyen received his B.S. in electrical engineering from Portland State University in 2015. He then joined the NEAR-Lab as a graduate research assistant and is currently working towards his masters degree. His interests include signal processing, communications, and acoustic signals. Currently, Phu is working on underwater acoustic sensors and their applications to ocean bottom classification.

Undergraduate Students

Charles Staffeld

Charles Staffeld is an undergraduate working on his bachelors in electrical engineering with a focus on analog and electromagnetics. He has worked in industry as a hardware designer for a small company which focused on simple IOT solutions with RF. In the NEAR-Lab, he is interested in designing test equipment to gather acoustic and electromagnetic data. In his spare time, Charles builds analog synthesizers and makes jokes.

Research Staff

Lanfranco Muzi, Ph.D.

Lanfranco Muzi received his M.Sc. degree in Computer Science and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Portland State University in 2009 and 2015, respectively. His current research pertains to underwater-acoustics modeling and physics based signal- and array-processing algorithms, with a special focus on marine ambient-noise processing. He has been a Research Fellow at the NATO-STO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (La Spezia, Italy) in 2013 and 2014, and is a chartered nuclear engineer in Italy, where he received his Laurea degree in Nuclear Engineering from Università di Pisa (Pisa, Italy). Dr. Muzi is a member of IEEE-Eta Kappa NU and of the Acoustical Society of America.

Visiting Researcher

John Gebbie, Ph.D.

Dr. John Gebbie obtained his Ph.D. at PSU in 2014 based on his research in the NEAR-Lab into new physics-based techniques for localizing small boats using autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for the purposes of enhancing harbor security and fighting illegal fishing. His research was funded through a fellowship he received from the Office of Naval Research. Currently, Dr. Gebbie manages a team of engineers in the Advanced Mathematics Division of Metron Scientific Solutions where he conducts applied research into underwater sonar systems. He also holds a visiting researcher position in the NEAR-Lab and continues to collaborate closely on several research topics.
